I don't know if you still need a response, but the way I see it is that it's a way to count. As an endurance exercise, the kids have to run for a certain amount of time, the winner is determined by the number of rounds they've run. A way to count that is by having the kids mark each round they run. They take an object at the beginning of their round and deposit it in the bucket at the end and then take a new object for a new round. That way, the group with the most objects in their bucket when the time runs out, wins
